Cat Friendly Clinic – Feline Services

Cat Services

Cats are unique animals and require feline-specific medicine and care. At The Pet Practice we have feline friendly care in mind and have designed our hospital and protocols to ensure the special needs of cats are met.

We are ISFM GOLD LEVEL ACCREDITED as a Cat Friendly Clinic. This is the highest level of accreditation available to veterinary clinics and recognises that our clinic design, facilities, protocols and staff training meet the highest possible standards for feline veterinary care under the International Society of Feline Medicine (ISFM) guidelines.

As cat caregivers and lovers ourselves, our team understand that vet visits can be stressful for you and your cat and so we have endeavoured to ensure your visit to us is as stress-free as possible so your special feline receives the veterinary care they deserve.

 

 

Our feline services include:

  • General veterinary care and guides for all life stages: kittenhood, young adult, mature adult and senior cats. Including:
    • Vaccination and titre testing
    • Parasite control including Annual Wellness Plans
  • Pre-visit anti-anxiety medication options for your cats’ visits to us (and advice on how to give it!)
  • Transport and cat carrier advice
  • Home visits for those cats who require the comfort of home
  • Cat medicating advice, training and help
  • General and advanced surgery – our experienced surgeons can perform a range of surgeries from general desexing to more complicated procedures
  • In-house complete blood and urine testing and microscopy (also available via a dedicated laboratory)
  • FIP treatment – only provided by a select few clinics in the state. Please visit FIP Cats Australia.
  • Management of feline diseases including (but not limited to) feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), chronic kidney disease, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, hypertension, osteoarthritis, dental disease, plus many more
  • Dental procedures including dental radiographs
  • Imaging including radiography and ultrasound with specialist liaison available
  • Behaviour consultations
  • DNA testing
  • Reproductive advice for breeders

ISFM Gold Level Accredited Cat Friendly Clinic

The ISFM Cat Friendly Clinic program is designed to ensure veterinary visits are as stress-free for cats and their caregivers as possible whilst providing gold standard veterinary care for all cats. It acknowledges that a clinics design, facilities protocols and staff training meet the highest possible standards for feline veterinary care. We are proud to be GOLD LEVEL accredited which is the highest level of accreditation available to veterinary clinics and recognises our efforts to provide the very best in feline care.

Our clinic has ISFM Practice Membership!

ISFM is the International Society of Feline Medicine which provides a global veterinary resource for feline medicine and surgery. Our membership enables our vets and nurses to stay up to date with the most modern standards for feline care and we are proud to offer the best of care to our feline patients.

All of our staff undergo frequent continuing education ensuring your pets receive the highest standard of veterinary care currently available.

FIP Treatment is available at The Pet Practice

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a well known previously fatal disease of kittens and cats. However recent medicine advancements mean FIP can now be successfully treated and cured and our clinic is able to offer FIP treatment to Perth cats

We stock the life saving FIP medication and our veterinarians are experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of FIP. We can offer FIP diagnosis, treatment and support to clients and their cats here in Western Australia.

Feline Blood Pressure Monitoring Available

High blood pressure (hypertension) is a common condition in cats over 7 years of age and if left undetected it is damaging to your cat’s eyes, kidneys, heart and brain.

The aim of regular blood pressure screening is to detect hypertension BEFORE these often irreversible side effects can occur as there are often no obvious external signs that your cat is suffering from hypertension.

The recommendations for blood pressure monitoring is:

  • Cats over the age of 7 should have yearly BP screening
  • Cats over the age of 11 should have twice yearly BP screens
  • Any cat diagnosed with a medical condition known to cause hypertension such as kidney disease or hyperthyroidism should have regular checks

Just like for humans, taking a blood pressure is easy to do during a routine appointment for your cat. Most cats tolerate this extremely well as it is a very low stress procedure and only takes a few minutes.

We offer services and advice in monitoring you cats blood pressure. If you have an older cat we recommend you contact us to book in for a blood pressure check.

Feline Behaviour Consultations

Cats often develop behaviour problems that can be difficult to manage and resolve. We understand that these situations can often be frustrating and stressful and as part of our clinic’s feline-focused care, we offer cat behaviour consultations with Dr. Leah.

Dr. Leah is passionate about feline behaviour and has undergone further study and courses in this area, as well as having experience managing numerous behaviour problems in cats.

Examples of behaviour problems you may have with your cat are:

  • Inappropriate toileting in the house
  • Inter-cat conflict and aggression
  • Human-directed aggression
  • Excessive scratching and destructive behaviour
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Overgrooming
  • Ingestion of foreign material (PICA)
  • Excessive vocalising
  • Nocturnal (night-time) behaviour issues

Behaviour consultations can be performed in clinic or via phone (telehealth) if this is preferred. For more information or to book your cat in for a behaviour consultation, please contact the clinic.
